The Russian Phobos-Grunt probe has finally launched from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome at 3:16 p.m. EST Tuesday toward the Mars moon Phobos on a mission to retrieve soil samples that we may learn more about the history of Mars and our solar system.
What is exciting though is that The Planetary Society has piggy-backed with its own mission. The Life Experiment.
Several years ago we (Delta C Dynamics, LLC) contracted to laser process a number of titanium canisters for The Planetary Society. Known as The Life Experiment these canisters will encapsulate various microbes to test feasibility and survivability of long duration exposure of the microbes to the harsh environment of deep space.

LIFE Experiment bio-module

Our preparations for sending out microbes on a roundtrip to the Martian moon Phobos and back have shifted into high gear. We have now completed the design of the ultra-tough canister that will be the organisms' "home" during their three year trip on board the Russian Phobos-Grunt spacecraft. An engineering model of the disk-shaped canister is currently in the works, and a flight module will follow within months.
